RED RIBBON WEEK October 23-31
Drug Free Comfort invites the community to take a visible stand against drugs by celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 23-31. The theme for this year is “Celebrate Life, Live Drug Free.”
Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs and encourages parents, educators, churches, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles.
In Comfort, the Comfort Independent School District will be using a program presented by the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office consisting of drug prevention videos and discussions with students during Red Ribbon Week. This will be in addition to the ongoing DARE program which emphasizes making Positive Choices. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to drug use and misuse of prescription drugs.
Comfort businesses will display the Red Ribbon Week posters and Drug Free Comfort will have more drug prevention information available at the Comfort Town Hall meeting scheduled for October 25, starting at 6PM at the Lobby Coffee Shop.
In 1985 DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena gave his life while preventing drug trafficking. The red ribbon became a symbol to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice.
The first Red Ribbon Week celebration was created by the National Family Partnership in 1988. Since then, the red ribbon has symbolized a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in communities across the nation.
Drug Free Comfort encourages parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, teachers, coaches, counselors, neighbors to have a conversation with our youth about the importance of staying drug free. Wear a Red Ribbon and talk to the kids. Celebrate Life, Live Drug Free!
